DAMAGE REPAIR IN THE DELAWARE RIVER

A team of divers from Randive, Inc. of Perth Amboy, NJ and welders from Brady Marine of Elizabeth, NJ recently completed repairs to a Motor Vessel which received heavy grounding damage in the Delaware River on November 13th, 2007.

The dive team arrived at the Gloucester City Terminal on Nov. 13 to survey the damage. Divers found a large set-in area on the center line of the flat bottom, with a 3 meter long by 150mm wide tear in the forepeak tank.

Upon completion of the initial inspection, a simple repair plan was formulated to temporarily seal the tear. Divers commenced repairs the following day. Despite limited visibility and slack water times in the Delaware River, the dive team was able to seal the tear and pump the 1954.8 cu meter tank in order to complete the internal inspection in under 24 hours.

Additional internal inspections were also performed by Lloyds surveyors and the US Coast Guard while the divers completed an U/W video inspection of the entire vessel.

Internal repairs began in the forepeak tank on Nov. 17. Seven yards of concrete was pumped over the damaged area, covering 5 frame bays. Once the concrete set, welders from Brady Marine fit approximately 1 ton of 12mm plates over the entire area. Internal repairs were completed Nov. 19 and the vessel was underway later that evening to discharge her cargo overseas and proceed to dry dock for permanent repairs.
